2009— Week 32
We had another great fishing week with no less than 10 Trophy Pike being caught! Kurt Wiesinger caught 3 Trophy Pike of 109 cm, 106 cm, 105 cm. Ronald Schopfer landed a total of 4 big Pike with two 108 cm and two 106 cm. Roger Gyr was successful as well with 3 Trophy Pike of 114 cm, 101 cm and 100 cm. All these big fish were caught on flies which is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations to all of them and welcome to our Trophy Club! We have never seen such a concentration of big Pike before, this is the result of well managed waters, regulations such as catch and release as well as slot limits. Fishing for Lake Trout was excellent although no Trophies were caught. But there is nothing wrong with beautiful 90 cm fish. Grayling fishing was excellent with many nice ones up to 45 cm being caught. Dry flies worked best but some of the guests were very successful with small spinners too. The Rainbow Trout were extremely active and many as big as 45 cm were caught. These fish give a really hard fight on light tackle, some of them took all the fly line right to the backing out. We only did one successful last trip to fish for King Salmon because the run is getting weaker and we don’t want to bother them when they are spawning. So far almost 1500 Kings have entered our river and we expect a total of about 1600. We still have bad news about our nearby Sockeye Salmon river in Alaska. The river is not dropping which is not a surprise considering the hot weather. We are hoping for cooler temperatures so we can finally target the Sockeyes. We had another week with beautiful weather and calm winds. There are still many forest fires around Dawson, Carmacks and Watson Lake and on quite a few days we had smoky conditions. So far almost 250’000 hectares of forest have been burnt. Once again, we are very safe here as there are no fires close to us.
